The Fox and the Geese is an ancient medieval strategy game. It is the latest of the classic ancient games I have studied, written about, and reimagined with illustrations drawn from medieval bestiaries. It is also linked to the history of a medieval convent in the Brescia area, the Convent of San Francesco d’Iseo, where the game is carved into a stone in the cloister.
This medieval pastime, simple yet rich in symbolism, represented the eternal struggle between cunning and cooperation. The fox, clever and free in its movements, faced a group of 13 geese advancing together to block it. The game is played by two players: one moves the 13 geese while the other controls the fox. By switching roles, players can engage with different strategies.
The monks saw in this game a metaphor for life, where every choice demands attention and collaboration.
The game set includes:
21x21 cm cardboard game board
book containing a brief history of the Convent of San Francesco d’Iseo, the origins and rules of the game, and a bibliography
pouch with small, lightweight wooden pieces
storage box with gold lettering
Ancient games play a fundamental role in understanding the cultures and societies of the past. These games were not merely tools of entertainment but served as educational, social, and ritual instruments.
This game is a handcrafted work of art and a cultural experience that connects players with the history of Iseo and the symbolism of the medieval period.
Like all my other works, it has been studied, designed, and prepared with passion and love.
